Is it Right to Lower the Drinking Age - 1070 Words

An abundance of people start to drink during young adulthood. In the last 30 days roughly 39% of high schoolers drank some amount of alcohol (CDC). Alcohol has been around for tens of thousands of years and it’s always been an underlying issue. My question is, â€Å"Why should we lower the legal drinking age†? Current proposals to lower the minimum legal drinking age to 18 would have some benefits like increasing revenue for bars and liquor stores. However the risks surpass the benefits. Many people think that if you’re 18 you’re portrayed as an adult, you’re old enough to serve your country, vote, and make your own decisions. In some cases this could be true, but lowering the drinking age would be way too risky for themselves and others. There was a telephone survey done in Princeton, NJ on July 12-15, 2007 that questioned 1,001 people 18 and older if the minimum legal drinking age should be lowered to 18. The results were 77% of the people said t hat they would disagree with this proposal, and only 22% said that they would support it (Carroll). The minimum drinking age of 21 should not be lowered to 18, because 18 year olds tend to drink in a different way than more matured adults drink. They’re irresponsible when it comes to drinking because they drink to get drunk. As a result, there are more DUI arrests, the motor vehicle accident rate increases, and binge drinking raises health concerns. We are all aware that there are different types of drinking. Analysis and Interpretation Financial Statements The financial year 2015 has been a great year for Barratt Developments Plc. in terms of increase in revenue and profits. The revenue increased by 19% in 2015, mainly because of the strong housing market in Britain. Britain is recovering from the slowdown hence; the demand for housing is more than the supply, thereby, giving a lot of scope for the company to increase their revenue. Also, the house prices have gone up due to a shortfall in supply and availability of low interest mortgage finance. The cost of sales has also increased but the increase is less than the increase in revenue. This has been achieved by the company due to its efforts towards improvement in operational excellence by reducing cost of raw materials procured. The gross profit has increased by an impressive 35% and the operating profit has also increased by a remarkable 41%. This has been possible because of lower operating costs which include both cost of sales and selling and administrative expenses and increased revenue. The net profit has increased by a whopping 47% as the interest expense has gone down. The company has had a strong Balance Sheet in 2015. The current assets have increased by 21% as the cash balance has increased by 31%. Also other current assets like inventories and receivables have increased. The current liabilities have also increased by 22% mainly due to an increase in taxes payable, trade and land payables and accruals and deferred income. The short term debt has reduced. The non current assets have remained stable with a fall in 3.2% due to a fall in deferred income taxes. The non current liabilities have increased by 25% due to an increase in trade and other payables and a marginal increase in long term debt by 1 million. The Equity has increased by 10.5% due to an increase in the retained earnings by 18%. The share capital has also increased by 1 million. The cash position of the company has been strong in 2015. There has been an increase in cash from investing and financing activities by 216% and 38% respectively. The cash flow from investing activities has increased due an increase in the investments accounted for using the equity method; there was a decrease in these investments in 2014 by 59 million. The financing activities is negative but better than 2014. The inflow has been only in the form of issue of share capital of 1 million whereas the outflow is of approx 145 million accounted by dividends paid and loan repayment. The cash inflow from operations has reduced by 58% mainly due to an increase in inventory by more than 100% and increase in taxes paid. There has been a remarkable increase in net cash by 500% in 2015 as compared to 2014 with a positive cash balance of 86 million, thus making it a cash rich company. From the above analysis of the items of the financial statements, we see that the Income Statement has improved considerably, the Balance Sheet has remained mostly stable with only major movement in inventories, and the Cash Flow Statement has also improved significantly. Financial Ratios Profitability Ratios The profitability ratios have improved in 2015 as compared to 2014. The gross profit margin has improved by 2.2% due to an increase in revenue and a fall in cost of sales. The operating margin is 15.3%, an increase of 2.4% from 2014. The interest expense has reduced as the company has paid back some of its debt and there are no short term debts. The Return on Equity is 12.1%, an increase of 3% from 2014. The increase is due to an increase in the net income attributable to the equity shareholders. The share capital has increased by only by 1 million whereas the net income has increased by 47%, thus increasing the returns on equity. The company has not paid high dividends; rather they have retained the profits which they will use for growth of the company, thus promising a bright future for the shareholders. The Return on Capital Employed (ROCE) for the company is 13%, an increase of 2.5% from 2014. This capital employed has reduced by 23 million due to a decrease in debt of the compan y by approx 24 million whereas the equity has increase only by 1 million. The increase in ROCE is due to an increase in EBIT by 41%. This means the returns on the capital employed have improved significantly. The overall profitability of the company has been very good in 2015 and 2015 has been the year of highest ever profit before tax. Efficiency Ratios The Total Assets Turnover ratio is 0.6 for both 2014 and 2015 with a slight increase in 2015 by 0.04 points. The revenue as well as the total assets both has increased with increase in revenue being slightly more than the total assets. There has been almost no improvement in the efficiency with which the company is utilizing its assets to generate revenue. The Industry Standard for a Construction Industry Assets Turnover Ratio is 0.8, so we can say that Barratt Developments is not up to the industry standards and the company should try to utilize its assets better. The Inventory Turnover has is 0.7 for the company whereas the industry standard is more than 1. We can say that the company has managed its inventory better than the other companies in the industry. The number of days of inventory turnover has increased by 10 days but the increase is very less as compared to the increase in inventory, thus signifying improving inventory turnover. The Receivables Turnover has reduced in 201 5 to 24.6 lower by 6 points. But the industry turnover for receivables turnover is 15; hence, the company is not up to the industry standards. It is not utilizing its receivables properly to generate revenue. The company is providing more credit than what the other companies in the industry are giving. The receivable turnover days has increased to 15 days which means on an average it takes 15 days for the company to recover its sales revenue. The company needs to work on its inventory and receivables management to match up to the industry standards. Liquidity Ratios The Current ratio of the company is 3.3 in 2015 almost similar to what it was in 2014. The current ratio should be more than 1 as per industry standards; hence the company is quite liquid as per industry standards. The current assets are sufficient to pay for the companys liabilities. Looking at the Quick Ratio, which is only 0.4 because most of the current assets of the company are in the form of inventory. A lot of cash is tied up in the inventory making the company less liquid in short term i.e. the company is not in a position to release cash immediately. However, this is the nature of a construction industry as the product they sell i.e. homes and buildings have a long construction period which is why the product of the company is mostly in WIP and it may take years for a product to complete, thus increasing the inventory. The Interest Coverage Ratio has improved by 300% in 2015 due to an increase in operating income and a decrease in interest expense. The company is comfortably able to pay for its finance charges from its operating income, thus making the company liquid. Financial Stability Ratio The Gearing ratio of the company is 0.05 in 2015 a slight increase from 2014. The company has very low debt as compared to the equity share capital. In the year 2015, the company has further reduced its short term debt by 24 million and increased the equity by 10.5%. The company relies mostly on its equity capital for funding its operations. Though this makes the company quite stable from shareholders point of view, but the company is unable to use the debt to gain tax benefits and has very low gear. Investment Ratio The Dividend Yield Ratio is 2.2% in 2015, an increase of 0.7% from 2014. The increase is due to a market capitalisation increase and an increase in dividends paid. It is good news for investors as there is an appreciation in the market value of the share and also an increase in the dividends paid, thus giving them more cash returns. Performance and Position up to December, 2015 Looking at the above analysis, we can say that the company has a strong profitability and stability. Even the liquidity is good looking at the nature of the industry the company is. The returns to shareholders are also satisfactory. The performance of the company has been quite satisfactory in 2015 with increasing profits and a strong balance sheet. A potential investor could look at investing in the company as it gives goods return on stocks and the fundamentals of the company are also strong with a strong future outlook instigated by a clear strategy and continuous improvement in management and operational capabilities. Possible Improvements to the Companys Annual Report Disclosure of dividends policy and practice Currently the annual report of Barratt Developments Ltd. does not have a dividend policy disclosure in the Accounting Policies. There is a mention of the dividend policy on page no. 17 of the annual report, but a detailed policy is not given. The policy is needed in the annual report as it reflects the companys cash and capital management process. Both debt and equity investors are interested in knowing how the company balances between the various competing priorities like investment needs, targets of credit rating agencies and other forms of return to stockholders. The policy could be either Progressive or payout ratio. Also, the disclosure would include how the company worked in order to deliver according to the policy. The above policy will appear on page no. 112 117 in the Accounting Policies section of the annual report. Reporting of Pay and Performance Currently the pay is reported in the Remuneration report section of the annual report. FRC lab suggests that the remuneration information should be clear and simple. The investors favour scenario charts being prepared which will access the relationship between the remuneration of the CEO and the company performance. The company is expected to provide three scenario bar charts i.e. when performance meets, exceeds and falls below the target. The bar chart will have the breakup of total remuneration into fixed, annual variables and long term incentives. Currently, the annual report of the company provides only the details of each of the executive directors salary; the scenario charts are not included. The above reporting of pay and performance will be done in the Remuneration Report given on page no. 75. Presentation of the Operating Cash Flow Currently the details of the operating cash flow by the indirect method are being shown in the notes to the financial statements. According to FRC lab reports, the indirect method of reconciling the profit or loss to the operating cash flow should be shown in the main part of the Cash Flow Statement. This is helpful to the investors when they view the annual report on the electronic media. The above suggestion of reporting the Operating Cash Flow in the main Cash Flow Statement would be given in the Financial Statements section of the annual report present in page no. 111. The Game Of Sports Marketing Essays - Marketing, Sports Business

The Game Of Sports Marketing The Game of Sports Marketing The business of sports is one of the fastest growing industries in the country. All over the world, many people participate as players and spectators in a variety of sporting activities, creating opportunities for the marketing of a company's goods and services. An important part of the business of sports is sports marketing, which revolves around understanding consumer behavior and motivating target markets to purchase goods and services. Sports marketing at Clemson University has many different aspects ranging from sports and technology and sport law to sponsorship and sports economics. ?Sports marketing is simply any sales or publicity-related activity associated with an organized sporting event (or events), its personalities, or the celebrity lifestyle of its participants? (Schaaf 22). There are two components of sports marketing: the marketing of sport and marketing through sports. Marketing of sport consists of the actual marketing of a particular sport such as football or baseball. This includes, but is not limited to, signage, endorsements, print media, broadcast media, billboards, and news media. Examples of marketing through endorsements are Michael Jordan wearing Nike shoes or John Elway drinking Coors Beer. Any type of media that mentions a team or athletic organizations is an example of marketing through the use of media. There are also many other ways of actually marketing or promoting the sporting event. Unlike marketing of sports which consists of marketing before and after a particular event, marketing through sports consists of marketing or promoting a particular product at a sporting event or in conjunction with a sporting event. This includes, but is not limited to, signage at the stadium, promotions during event, and free give-a-ways. Every professional team or athlete participates in some kind of marketing or promotion. Not only do the ?major leagues? participate in the marketing process but so do the smaller, ?minor leagues? do as well. Every athletic organization, big or small, needs sports marketing for its survival. Sports marketing is needed because it helps the athletic organizations obtain profit, which is needed for survival. ?For a promotion to be successful, it must be profitable. And to be profitable, it must enhance some, if not all, of the following goals: 1. Paid attendance, 2. Corporate tie-ins, 3. Sponsor value, and 4. Media coverage? (Helitzer 317). Promotions must increase the number of people at the event, or paid attendance, it also must enhance corporate tie-ins, which are signs or give-a-ways at the stadium. Sponsor value, or the value perceived by the sponsor must also be enhanced along with media coverage. Media coverage is enhanced by sending the local or national media sources bulletins about the events or by having press conferences. A strategy that a sports marketer must use is to stagger the promotional gimmicks throughout the event. If one staggers the promotion, then the audience is always aware of the event and looking out for the promotions. Another objective of sports marketing is creating sales. ?The modern sports marketer is charged with one simple responsibility: to increase the sources of revenue? (Westerbeek 6). This includes obtaining more sponsors and also getting more spectators at the event. No longer is attendance enough to support a sports organization; the sports marketer must find ways to increase the number of sponsors and availability of sponsorships. Baseball and football organizations around the world are building new stadiums to increase room sponsorships, luxury boxes, and entertainment areas. The Atlanta Braves have built a new stadium, Turner Field, which is more like a amusement park than the traditional baseball stadium. They have added games, restaurants, and bars to attract fans, which help the team become profitable. The new age of sports marketing is here, it is one that is all about one thing: greed for more money. The athletic organizations are never satisfied with any level of profit. They are always in search of ways to make more money. ?Sports marketing is one of the most difficult tasks here at Clemson University,? states John Seketa. Here at Clemson University, the Athletic Department is responsible for marketing to the athletes, marketing corporate products to the fans, and marketing the event itself. Clemson must market to the athletes so that it can continue

Non-lethal Weapons

Non-lethal Weapons Free Online Research Papers Non-lethal weapons (also known as less-than lethal weapons) are one of the most important forms of technology in the twenty-first century. They are a well-needed augmentation for the guns and other types of lethal weapons that are being used to defend innocent lives without the desire to cause bloodshed and death. Mainly used by law enforcement and U.S. forces, non-lethal weapons can also be purchased and owned by civilians over a specific age in some states. The different types of non-lethal weapons range from hand-held spray-able irritants to long-range chemical lasers. While the types are different in physical appearance and content, their purpose is the same. Non-lethal weapons are meant to keep a person or group from harm by confusing, disorienting, or momentarily distracting potential threats. They can be used in varying types or situations with varying levels of danger. Well-known and often-used types of non-lethal weapons are the irritant named Mace and the electroshock weapon called a Taser. Mace is a tear gas made from 1% CN gas in a solvent of 2-butanol, propylene glycol, cyclohexene, and dipropylene glycol methyl ether that comes in an aerosol spray form and is meant to be sprayed into the face of an attacker. It causes an intense burning sensation in the attacker’s eyes and causes the person to cough and gag due to suffocation effect caused by breathing it in. This would give the user a perfect opportunity to flee from their enemy. Mace is commonly used by police officers all over the United States . The Taser is also a weapon typically equipped by the members of local police forces. When used on a person, the Taser is a device that fires out two small dart-like electrodes that enter into a subjects flesh and uses an electrical current to disrupt the persons control of their muscles and results in strong muscle contractions. Meant to b e used on potentially dangerous subjects, it is a simple and effective tool to escape possible harm. There are also many non-lethal weapons still underdevelopment that are far more complex and useful compared to it much simpler counter-part. Possibly one of the most impressive forms of non-lethal weapons still under development by the U.S. military is the pulsed energy projectile weapon (PEP). Designed for riot control from a distance, the pulsed energy projectile uses an invisible chemical laser that creates a large flash and shockwave to disorient and knock-out all people being targeted. The PEP is said to be able to work over distances of up to 2 kilometers and is more than likely going to be mounted on vehicles due to its large size. Although it is still only under development, the PEP shows how advanced in technology the Non-lethal weapons are becoming. Non-lethal weapons have a very positive effect on out society. They give policemen another option for how to protect civilians. This new options is a major improvement compared to the traditional firearms and blunt weapons commonly used by police officers because they can save lives without serious injury. This makes sure that justice is properly served in an emergency situation. The military benefits from Non-lethal weapons as well by allowing them more options on how to defend themselves and make assaults on enemies. There are nearly no negatives to Non-lethal weapons. The only problem with them is the slim chance that they can kill someone. There has only been a handful of cases where a Non-lethal weapon has ended a person’s life, but in most of those cases the victim a pre-existing condition that made them more susceptible to fatal injury. There was one such case where a person with a weak heart was killed while being struck with a Taser. Although it is possible, it is very rare that a person is seriously injured by a Non-lethal weapon. The fact that we have created an alternate option to lethal weapons is one of the ways Non-lethal weapons have impacted the world around us. Non-lethal weapons have certainly made a strong impact in the United States and other parts of the world with the technology to build them. They have not gone unnoticed by U.S. forces and law enforcement. The authorities have fully-integrated the new non-lethal technologies to their arsenal of equipment, which has spared many lives and made certain situations much easier to handle. Without the creation of Non-lethal weapons, conflicts that typically would have ended in death can now end without bloodshed by either party. The creation of lasers and other types of technologies designed to be integrated into Non-lethal and lethal weapons is causing advancement in the level of technology in the world. Non-lethal weapons are a very important form of technology. They have helped cause technological advancement because without them there would be no need for the development of lasers and other types on technology. They allow civilians to defend themselves against crime and allow U.S. forces safer ways to end conflict. I believe Non-lethal weapons are a great form of technology and will continue to save lives as long as they are still around. Not sure yet Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Not sure yet - Research Paper Example We suspect tat Jesus, Nancy’s husband, is waiting for her at night nearby the cabin or he is just close by and that he will definitely kill Nancy anytime. Therefore the night fall is feared by Nancy and the singer of the song alike since it means being near the imminent danger. Nancy, black American, works at the Compson family, whites. She had been impregnated by a white although she was married to Jesus. Her husband had left her for being promiscuous leading to her illicit pregnancy with a white man. The story is narrated by Quentin, who is twenty four years old is bringing it from a nine year old point of view when he was young. As a child, Quentin and his siblings, Caddy, his sister; and Jason, younger brother; do not comprehend the implications of the actions that are happening around them that had caused Nancy’ weird behaviors that were manifested with fear. Nancy had herself locked up in a prison although she was the one ho had been assaulted by Mr. Stovall, a Ba ptist deacon, who Nancy claimed to be the one responsible her pregnancy. She was a shamed of facing her husband because of that. Mr. Stovall knocked her to an extent of removing some of her teeth instantly and later taken as the culprit in the whole encounter. The fact that Nancy was a black American worsened her situation since she could not get fair treatment; racialism caused most of the suffering experienced in the story by Nancy. 1.2 Setting The setting of the story is at the Southern states where racial segregation had taken root with the inclusion of Jim Crow rules that discriminated the black Americans as inferior and majorly owned as slaves to work in the plantations. The constant repletion by Nancy that I am a nigger showed her resentment for being a black in a society that discriminated against the blacks. The use of orders by Mr. and Mrs. Compson when referring to Nancy shows the level at which they had assumed her to be as per the order of that time. In one instance Que ntin is asked to head to the kitchen and order Nancy that she can go home now; this is a clear indication that the physical possibility to leave is only granted by Mr. Compson without it she can not leave; she obviously did not have the right to leave before being ordered to do so. This displays the relation between Nancy and Mr. Compson as one of a slave and a master respectively (Fitzgerald and Harris, 1987). 1.3.1 Segregation The unequal relationship between the whites and the Black Americans is broadly exhibited in Nancy’s reproaching of Mr. Stovall, the deacon, specifically for not paying her the service rendered three times, for getting intimate with her. He reacts through a thorough beating he gave her that led to her loosing a number of her teeth. The town marshal did nothing about simply because she was a black. Mr. Compson refers to her as a culprit in the whole incident since she should have let the white man alone. Mrs. Compson feels being looked upon when Compson decides to escort Nancy to ensure her security. She wonders why his husband is concerned about a nigger’s safety instead of taking care of her. This resenting of Mrs. Compson shows her feeling of superiority in relation to Nancy who is a black American. She at first questions whether Nancy has seen Jesus, her husband, to claim that she is afraid that he will attack her; in this case she is implying that Nancy is cheating, a clear indication

Please check out the Cover Sheet Template to start yourself off right: Go to the Library tab, click on the APA Information link in the Useful Links box on the right-hand side of the page. Scroll down and you’ll find the Cover Sheet Template. APA formatting shouldn’t stand in the way of you earning full points! ] A very good example! It’s very important that you take the time to truly understand what you’re writing about, then develop a clear, concise outline to help you write your paper. Write simply and concisely: just like you talk! Many of your sentences are very unclear, to the point where I wasn’t sure what you were attempting to say. Most unfortunately as well, you did not cite any of the research noted on your reference sheet in the text of your paper. Not giving proper credit to the authors is considered plagiarism. As stated in the Syllabus, Instructor Policies and posted earlier in the Main forum, this has resulted in an automatic 50% grade point reduction. Always review the syllabus, instructor policies and rubrics carefully to ensure you’ve covered everything that’s required. When in doubt, contact your instructor! SEE RUBRIC AT END OF PAPER? Ethics and Morals [Always indent paragraphs in APA]Virtue Theory, Utilitarianism, and Deontological ethics tries to install [wrong word] what the basis of living is as a virtuous person. [Don’t forget to cite the research from your readings where you learned these concepts! ] These ethics address the similarities and differences of how the rules of conduct are recognized in respect to a particular class of human actions. [Actually, the theories don’t address the similarities and differences in rules of conduct. They attempt to define rules of conduct. Your task with these assignment is to identify the similarities and differences between the theories. ] The ideal of goodness is the opinion of the similarities and the differences between virtue theory, utilitarianism, and deontological. [Actually the ideal of goodness derives from various aspects of these theories – not their differences and similarities] Sometimes ethics is used interchangeably with morality to define or describe good character. [Don’t forget your preview statement to tell your reader what you plan to discuss and in what order. See the Writing Framework posted on the Course Materials OLS forum for guidance] [Don’t forget subheadings as noted in the Student Sample paper posted on the Course Materials OLS forum and rubric] The likenesses between these theories are that ethics are ways to understand how people become moral human beings and figure out how to make good decisions. In virtue theory the morality is learning how to apply what was taught. [True – If the person’s character is good, then he or she is virtuous – regardless of his or her actions. ] Utilitarianism’s approach to ethics can be characterized as a person of no good behavior known as no moral good[Awkwardly written. Utilitarianism refers to the importance of the community over the individual. ]. The deontological theory in ethics focuses on the actions a person performs. If the action is beneficial to the well being of others as it is beneficial to the community the act is considered good. [Awkwardly written: If the act itself is considered beneficial to the community, then the person is considered good.] The unlikeness between these theories are that virtue theory cannot be contrasted with morality, as of deontological theory can be contrast with morality. Ethics is supposed to provide us with moral principle leading to difference of working virtue theory. The deontological theory approaches morality as the focus on the desire to, and want to accomplish goals by action. Utilitarianism approaches to morality as the means of no moral act, the act of doing wrong with the acknowledgement of wrong doing. [Always proofread carefully from your reader’s perspective. I’m not sure what you’re saying at all in this paragraph.] The personal experience that was explained in relationship to virtue, value, and moral concepts as it relates to one of the three theories[awkwardly written]. Mary asked [keep your tenses consistent] John the supervisor for a partial day off so she could take her daughter to the doctor for a checkup, but she was really going camping with her daughter and she needed to leave early. John agreed to give the partial day off and Mary was to leave at 2:00 p. m. , but Mary left earlier then she was suppose [sp] to leave. She left at 12:00 noon and still wanted to get paid for the two hours of work on her time schedule. On the virtue part if Mary had not chosen to lie about why she needed to take off from work, she would not have lost her job. [Good point. Be sure to tell your reader than because she was dishonest to her supervisor, she was fired. ] Because Mary lied about the need for the day off she did not value her job very well. Had she chosen to tell the truth she would have still had a job. [Good example! Which of the theory is most relevant to this example? ] In conclusion, ethics and morals played a major role in all three parts of the theory. [Actually, they are three separate theories.] The three theories represent the moral excellences, the ethical doctrine and moral obligation of a virtuous person. Theories are defined according to rules of the guidelines of the community. [A good conclusion summarizes the key points from the paper and does not introduce new ideas. Confession of the Jews and First Confession :: Confession of the Jews Essays

Confession of the Jews and First Confession In comparing the books "Confession of the Jews" and "First Confession", I have found there to be similarities and differences. For example, "First Confession" deals with a boy converting from a boy to a young man by going to confession and telling his sins for the first time. "Conversion of the Jews" deals with converting a boy into someone he has never really seen which was a free thinker which only older people usually do. In "Conversion of the Jews" Ozzie, who was the main character, had a problem with getting along with the priest Rabbi Binder at Hebrew School. Rabbi Binder didn't really like Ozzie because he was always asking a lot of questions and Rabbi Binder was always getting angry at him. In "First Confession" Jackie, the main character, also had a problem. Jackies problem was similar to Ozzies, but also different. Jackie had a problem with his sister Nora. Nora believed that Jackie was always lying and being bad. On his confession day his mother sent Nora go with Jackie. Nora ordered Jackie to tell all of his sins, including how he was mean to the grandmother who lived with them. Ozzie seemed troubled to Rabbi Binder in "Conversion of the Jews". In reality Jackie wasn't bad at all, he was just a boy who wanted answers to his questions. And that was proved when Ozzie asked a question in class and Rabbi Binder went crazy and hit Ozzie because he thought Ozzie was trying to be a wise guy. So Ozzie tried to prove a point to Rabbi Binder and his fellow classmates by running to the roof and making believe he was going to jump. With Ozzie being on the roof it gave Rabbi Binder a bigger belief that Ozzie was crazy and troubled. Ozzie wasn't really crazy, he was just trying to make a point that he really wasn't dumb. Ozzie just wanted to believe that there was really a Christ. So with the point that Ozzie was trying to make helped to convert everyone and their beliefs. Jackie, like Ozzie, was also troubled in "First Confession". He was a young boy who lived with his family, including the grandmother. Jackie believed the grandmother didn't like him very much, so he did mean things to her like hide under the table when she cooked dinner. When it came time for his first confession he went with his sister Nora. Nora tormented Jackie and scared him into believing he was a sinner and he will pay for all of his sins.

Why Are We Losing All Our Good People?

This is all about a very common trend prevailing in most of the companies, Attrition of employees. Very often employees leave a company when they find a better job or some other career option. This is the case of a company named Sambian Partners, where Mary, the head of HR and Helen, the CEO face a lot of problem when Tom, one of their trusted employees quits their company and joins J&N which is supposed to be their competitor. Then the administration tries to figure out what exactly went wrong with him and go for surveys which would enable them to understand employees better. The other employees on hearing this sudden departure of Tom give their own views as to what lead Tom to take such a big decision. A month later Helene comes to know that another employee named Adrienne is planning to quit the job and join J&N. Unable to think of what is right or wrong she immediately promotes her to a higher post and succeeds in retaining her. In the end we find another survey report being discussed by Mary and Helen where they find that although the employees are overall satisfied there are still some grievances that need to be addressed. Here is a detailed report about the persons involved in the case study. 1. Helen Gasbarian She is the daughter of Peter, the founder of the company and is currently the CEO of the company. Being a very responsible person she wonders what is causing the employees to quit. She feels that they take care of the employees and treat them well. Although she couldn’t do anything to retain Tom, when Adrienne decided to quit she took a very bold decision by giving her a promotion and finally saved one of the company’s valuable employees. Being the CEO of the company she took a vital decision without any making any delay. One negative aspect of her character is that at times she likes to blame others for the failures of the company without considering the exact case. 2. Mary Donillo. Being the head of the human resources, she shows great devotion towards the company when she interviews and tries to convince Tom to stay back in the company. At the same time she maintains a very good relationship with her CEO as well as the employees of the company. The survey she took to understand the employees better shows her ability to tackle the difficult situation. 3. Tom Forsythe After serving for Sambian Partners for nearly eight years with a very good reputation in the company, his decision to quit the job and join J&N seems pretty normal. Although he didn’t reveal the exact cause of leaving the company in a lucid manner, we can infer that his primary motive was to get a higher post and a better salary which he felt was not possible in the near future in this company. We can’t call him a loyal employee and he is likely to change companies frequently in the near future. 4. Adrienne Perle In the beginning when she justifies the decision of Tom to quit the job we can notice that she is also somewhat dissatisfied with the management and administration of the company. Later when her plans of following Tom come to limelight she admits the truth when confronted by Helen. We can conclude that she has a bit of loyalty towards the company which made her stay back when offered with a promotion. 5. Bob Wortham He is the vice president of engineering and also the one who first told Helen about Adrienne’s plans of quitting the job. He is really worried about the huge project of which Adrienne is a part of. He is desperate to retain her and sought the help of Helen and Mary.
